'Tis the Season to...Network

Here are seven tips to get your house in order and make the most out of the most wonderful time of the year!

It’s the holiday season. For some, it means putting up decorations, fretting about family coming over, more holly, more jolly and more obligations. It means that you will be out and about more. Are already dreading your partner's company holiday party? Let’s think differently about the holidays. Focus on your career strategy, don’t focus on how many more calories you are going to eat.

 

Have you been to the shopping mall already once today? Now, I despise the mall; you are not going to see me there often, however at Christmas, I always like to go. Maybe because I worked at the mall when I was younger and spent so much time there over Christmas or the festive decor. Here's the thing about the mall at holiday time, you are always going to run into someone. When you do, set-up coffee, better yet, grab a cup of coffee or a drink and catch-up right there!

 

Tis the season to see more people and be seen. Job seekers and business owners here is why that is important, network activation. Change your mindset about this time of year and be opportunistic in your thinking. Start by truly listen to what others they have to say and don’t be afraid to speak up about yourself. They might give clues for problems they have at work, and you may be the person to help fill a gap. Maybe your business can solve a problem for them or has product or service they didn’t know they were missing out on.

 

Do you have a party coming up? Get ready to talk to people. You need to be prepared to tell your story. Set a goal to talk to someone new. Don’t be afraid to say “I am looking for new opportunities” or “I have a business that provides” (insert what you do and how clients benefit). Start to ask questions. Ask open-ended questions, listen to what people have to say, make a connection, understand how win-win scenarios can be produced.

Job posting trends up come mid-to-late January, you're likely to see an uptick in job postings, which often carries well into February. There is more movement in Jan, people are getting promoted or part ways. If you have been networking and communicating your story, you may already have your resume out there and be ready to move. Get your house in order and be already in the door before the jobs are posted.

 

If you are going home for the holidays, it means going to the hometown bar, where chances you run into someone you haven’t seen since high school is 100%. Insert your town name and the hometown bar. You know the question is coming...what do you do? Get your elevator/brand pitch ready!

 

Here are seven tips to get your house in order and make the most of the most wonderful time of the year:

 

1.   Soul Search.

  • Who do you want to be when you grow up (I mean this for 40- and 50-year old’s too!!) When you know what you want to do, it is easier for people to connect you to the right people or opportunities.

2.   Understand what your unique value proposition is (for career or business).

3.   Update your resume.

  • If you were out with friends or colleagues and someone was impressed with your background and wanted to learn more, would you have a current resume to send them? Or would you look dated with your college career center resume from 15-20 years ago?

4.    Have conversations over coffee, drinks or Christmas cookies.

5.   Start listening!! Ask the right questions.

6.   Tell people your brand pitch!

7.   The most crucial part: follow through.

  • Send your resume and a note telling the person how nice it was to see them and ask if they would be willing to make an introduction for you or pass on your resume.
  • Send a note with your website that recaps your business and how you could help fill a need for the other person.

The year was, yeah, you don’t need to know that, and my college internship was as a promotions coordinator at a now-debunked radio station in Minneapolis. Now I can imagine you are reading this thinking, you lucky girl, I bet that was fun! If you consider driving a massive van around town, filled with crap and a million empty cups, going to events in weird places, and hauling things around, well, then yes, I was lucky. Now there were some perks. I met a few celebrities and did taste what it meant to be an event coordinator, which I wanted to do after school. It was an unpaid position, but I did get college credits for it, and more importantly, it was a job close to what I wanted to do, in the market I wanted to be in.


This experience was so valuable, even if at one event I had to sit at a used car dealership for a live remote or haul hair dryers in the Mall of America. It taught me responsibility, what an office setting is like, and that work is well, just that work. But most importantly, it helped me meet connections and get my first real career job when I graduated from college.


Forbes  quotes a study that says a college graduate and working at a paid internship shows, 60% of the time, that internship will turn into a job offer.


If you are a parent of a college-age kid, have you asked them about their internship plans? If you are a college kid reading this, what is your plan? Have you started applying? Internships bring real-world experiences and help fill up a resume. Ideally, look for a paid internship and one that t college credits can be used to. Make sure to checked in with the career services department to understand credits and look for opportunities with alumni. Can you make any introduction to anyone in your network to see what openings they have? Ensure you or your student knows what areas they want to work in, which helps reach out to your network. The more specific you can be, the better.


Indeed lists of their top 12 reasons internships  are beneficial. To get these beneficial internships, a quality resume is necessary. Do you have a resume that will stand out? Parents, does your child have one? 

Make sure the resume is:

  • Free of errors
  • Shows a little personality
  • Clearly articulates their jobs and activities, Captain of the golf team, make sure to list that! 
  • The resume should highlight the course load, any employment, volunteer positions, and collegiate sports.
